Move-Out Cleaning Checklist for Pittsburgh Renters and Sellers
The room-by-room checklist landlords and buyers actually inspect — and the items that most often cost people their security deposit.
Move-out cleaning is graded differently than regular cleaning. A landlord or buyer's agent isn't scanning for tidiness — they're inspecting specific surfaces on a walkthrough form. Knowing which ones is the whole game.
Kitchen
Inside and outside of every cabinet and drawer, including the toe kicks. Inside the refrigerator, including shelves, drawers, and the seal. Inside the oven, plus the drip pans and the range hood filter. Behind and beneath the stove and fridge if they roll out. Sink, faucet, and drain descaled. Countertops and backsplash degreased.
Bathrooms
Toilet base and bolts, not just the bowl. Tub and shower grout, including the corners where mildew starts. Shower door tracks. Exhaust fan cover. Mirror and light fixtures. Inside vanity cabinets and drawers.
Whole home
Baseboards, window sills, and interior window glass. Light switch plates and door frames — high-touch spots that show fingerprints under an inspector's flashlight. Ceiling fan blades. Closet shelves and floors. Vents and registers. All floors vacuumed and mopped last, after everything above them has been cleaned.
The items that most often cost a deposit in Pittsburgh
In our experience across Allegheny County rentals, the recurring deductions are: oven interiors, refrigerator seals, window sills with winter salt residue, bathroom grout, and basement floors in older South Hills and East End homes. Salt is the local one — Pittsburgh winters push road salt into entryways and it leaves a chalky film that regular mopping won't lift without an acidic cleaner.
Timing it right
Book the move-out clean for after the home is fully empty. Cleaning around furniture and boxes means the crew has to revisit surfaces later, which costs you money and rarely passes inspection. Most Pittsburgh moves happen at month end, so book two to three weeks ahead for the last three days of the month.
