Pittsburgh puts down a lot of road salt, and hills mean it goes down heavy. From November to March, the biggest threat to your floors isn't dirt — it's calcium chloride and sodium chloride crystals riding in on boots.
Why salt is worse than plain dirt
Salt is abrasive and hygroscopic. The abrasion scratches hardwood finish and dulls luxury vinyl plank. The moisture-attracting part is worse: salt keeps pulling humidity out of the air, leaving a persistent white haze that returns days after you mop. Plain water and standard floor cleaner spread it around instead of removing it.
What actually removes it
A mild acidic solution neutralizes the residue — a 1:3 white vinegar to warm water mix works on sealed hardwood and tile, applied with a barely damp microfiber mop and dried immediately. Never let standing liquid sit on hardwood. On carpet, blot with the same solution rather than scrubbing, which drives crystals deeper into the fiber. Vacuum before any wet step, always: wetting dry salt grit turns it into a paste that's much harder to lift.
Preventing it at the door
Two mats per entry — a coarse scraper outside and an absorbent runner inside — remove the majority of what would otherwise reach your living space. Add a boot tray in the mudroom and a rule that shoes come off there. For homes with attached garages, mat the garage entry too; that's the door most Pittsburgh families actually use.
